Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre

The Commonwealth Respite & Carelink Centre is managed by Family Based Care (North) with the Division of General Practice Northern Tasmania (General Practice North) forming part of a Joint Advisory Committee overseeing the operations of both centres.

The centre provides a range of respite options, both residential and home or community based. It includes a service information and referral service which provides a single point of access to a national database of information about health, disability and community care service providers across Australia.

Individual carers, community care service providers, general practitioners, other health professionals and members of the public can contact CRCC on free call 1800 522 222*. *Calls from mobile phones are charged at applicable rates.

The centre can provide access to a range of respite options, both residential and home or community-based. Respite can be provided in a variety of situations - emergency respite (for example, when a carer becomes ill or temporarily unable to continue caring for the care recipient), regular respite over a short period of time, which may or may not lead to ongoing respite care and occasional or infrequent respite as the carer needs a break.

Who is a primary carer?

“The primary carer is the person who provides the most informal assistance to the care recipient. This could be a family member, friend or neighbour. The assistance has to be ongoing for at least 6 months and provided for ‘everyday types of activities’ to a person”. The six months does not apply for people in need of palliative care.
